The Best Cardio Exercises for Burning Fat

Get off your Buddha yoga mat and join the rest of us up here. I can barely “yogi-bear” you.

Exercise is important, and it’s something almost all of us get everyday. It may be a small walk, or it may just be a walk to the kitchen and back. If you’re looking to lose weight, you’ll probably have to try a little harder. Do you want to burn calories, get healthy and look/feel better? Getting exercise can help. I’m going to list the best cardio exercises for burning fat. This is the best cardio workout.

So, what? Are we going to get the Ouija board out or what? When is the priest coming? I’m ready to exercise some demons. Release them from the body!

Exercise can come in many forms: walking, running, swimming, skipping rope, shadow boxing, and biking. If you’re looking for muscle gain, some of these exercises can moderately help with that as well. There are plenty of other specific exercises you can enjoy, but I’m here to cover the basics. Below I’m listing the best cardio exercises to burn fat and get in shape.

Walking (Best Cardio Workout)

Olympian: John Chambers

I’m gonna take a stroll down the street.

If you’re looking for something easy on the joints, walking is a no-brainer. Walking is the best exercise to start with when looking to get into cardiovascular exercise. Walking is something you do every day anyway, so try to make it more of a habit.

Walk, Forrest, walk…! For Christ’s sake, Forrest, please walk.

Exercise is the healthiest way to keep yourself active, and it’s synonymous with being active anyway. Going out for a brisk walk every day is a good way to start the day out right. If it’s sunny outside, you’ll be sure to catch some of that vitamin D as well. If you want an easier alternative to running, especially if you’re just starting out, take a short walk.

Running (Best Cardio Workout)

Best Cardio Workout…

Olympian: Usain Bolt

Yeah… run Forrest, run!

Be it jogging, sprinting, or anything in between, running is literally the next step to take from walking. If you want, you can go to the gym and get on the treadmill or elliptical and run on these machines for less joint pain. Running is a little more hazardous for the joints, so be sure to start slow and work your way up. Since you’re running instead of walking, you’re going a longer distance and require less time to do the same amount of work. No kidding, right? Don’t forget about the after-burn, the more intense the cardio, the longer you’ll burn calories after you’re done exercising.

Well, she sure game him a run for his money.

Warming up is also an important part of exercising, so be sure to stretch and start slow before you speed up or add incline. You need little more than yourself, but you can always mark your distance and calories burnt with online apps now. These apps come in handy no matter the form of exercise. Now warm up, get outside and begin collecting those calories burned.

Swimming (The Best Cardio Exercises for Burning Fat)

Best Cardio Workout…

Olympian: Michael Phelps

Yeah, stroke it, and breast stroke it good.

Swimming is fun, especially if you’re at the beach or in a pool with family and friends. If you want to take things a little more seriously though, you can swim for exercise. The water you’re in is for more than just fart bubbles, you know. Swimming works the whole body, and since you’re in water, it adds additional resistance. If you’re already swimming, you’re probably already burning some calories, but if you make it a sport, you can burn it for real.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no wait… it’s a float that resembles a real buoy… okayyy… .

Swimming burns more calories than walking, and it works many of the muscles in your body. Although it does require more time to go the same distance. Since you can’t do as much swimming as other exercises, Swimming is a great way to build a resistance workout, especially HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) cardio. Not only will you burn just as many calories, you’ll learn to test your limits and do it in less time.

Jump Rope

(The Best Cardio Exercises for Burning Fat)

Olympian: Bob Beamon (long jumper)

A hop, jump and skip away… .

If you want one of the best aerobic exercises for the whole body, you can’t do any better than jumping rope. Not only is it a good exercise to get the blood pumping and circulating the body, it’s great for weight loss. Jump rope is very popular among fighting sports to get in shape. It also helps work the entire body, which it does. All it takes is a rope, and there you go. It may take a little bit of practice, but don’t let that veer you away.

Hey, even a game of hopscotch can get you prepared to trip the skip rope.

Out of everything on this list, I’d say that skipping rope, with the added resistance from the rope, is the best overall exercise, especially for and calorie burning. It burns the most calories, and it’s because the arms and legs are both worked. If you want to tone up, this is the exercise for you. Learn a few tricks, gain some speed, and now you’re a verified “jump rope” expert.

Shadow Boxing

(The Best Cardio Exercises for Burning Fat)

Olympian: Muhammad Ali (Boxer)

It’s a 1, 2, hook and uppercut.

If you’re looking to take a stance and get in shape at the same time, shadow boxing is a good way to do it. It’s also a great way to start learning how to throw a punch. Shadow Boxing is popular among those who, well, you know, box. Boxing is a sport where two fellows in a ring face-off against each other. The competitors wear gloves, and with their hands up, try to knock the other guy out with punches above the waste. Yeah, you guys know what it is, but I’m just mentioning it anyway.

Are you orthodox, southpaw, or unorthodox? I always just thought that I was weird, plain and simple.

Shadow boxing simply means boxing without an opponent. It’s great for working and toning the upper body, and burns at least as many calories as a fast jog, depending on the intensity. It’s great as a warm-up, especially if you plan on hitting something heavier. The strictest sense of shadow boxing is boxing against a wall facing your shadow. You can also shadow box — or simply train — by sparing, hitting a heavy, speed or double-end bag (which end up burning more calories). You probably have a gym nearby, or you can install any of these in your home gym. If not, you can easily get by, by throwing punches at nothing.

Cycling (The Best Cardio Exercises for Burning Fat)

Best Cardio Workout…

Lance Armstrong (Tour De France)

Get your butt in gear, and get ready to ride.

Like everything in life, it comes in cycles, or that’s at least what some people say. Cycling is a great way to exercise, and the best instrument for that is a…? That’s right, you got it, a bicycle. Yes, riding a bike is one of the best ways to not only preserve your joints, but to burn fat and have fun. You can do plenty with a bike, and you don’t have to be going fast to burn those calories fast.

“Right round, baby, right round… .” Eh, you wouldn’t get it.

Cycling can come in many forms: stationary bike, imaginary bike (on your back), or riding an actual bike. Fundamentally speaking, riding a bike is all the same: a simple motion of circling pedals with your feet. If you like putting the pedal to the metal, this is a good way to relax and exercise at the same time, especially if it’s stationary. If you’re looking to burn up the road or pop a few wheelies, cycling is the thing to do.

Oh, baby, do you know how to bounce…!

The best cardio exercises for burning fat…

Exercise is exercise, but there are some that are better than others. If you want to keep easy on the joints, take a walk. Do you want to push your cardiovascular system a little further? Go for a run of fun. If you want both, get on a bike and ride into the sunset. If you want something that works the whole body, then skip some rope. You want something with a little more resistance for some muscle? Go for a swim, and allow it to go swimmingly. You want to the learn how to fight? Get in stance and throw a few punches at nothing — shadow box!

Give me a break!

Find an exercise that works for you. Also, maybe do a little more research first, and go for it from there. You can always do push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and so on, but this week is cardio; these are great body weight exercises. This may be something I get to next week, but for now, get some healthy cardio and eat a healthy diet. Be it at the gym, outside, or anywhere that you can get yourself in shape — learn, get lean, and have fun. Trust me, you’ll learn to enjoy it.
