10 Reasons Why Psychedelics are Bad

While everyone is always talking about why psychedelics are the best thing around, there are certainly downsides. It is not too uncommon for people to have negative opinions of these drugs, but it is often irrational. I am listing this because I want to add some rationality to the popular side of this subject. There are plenty of people experienced in these drugs who understand and share this as well. There are 10 reasons why psychedelics are bad, but it does not mean that other drugs are better. It simply means that they are not as good as some people make them out to be. While they are often put on a pedestal, the grandstanding nature of psychedelic users must be acknowledged.

The problem is that they are coming from a position of condoning the downsides for the greater good. This means that the consequence should be fully understood in an environment where they are not. There should be something dedicated to sharing more than a simple warning sign to those who hear nothing more. It is also important to note that any negative consequences should be listed, no matter how small. Even if much of this is obvious to some, not everyone is aware, and it certainly warrants mention. It may be good to have a hard reset from time to time, it is still just a drug. There are worse hallucinogens out there, but this is besides the point, as I am merely the devil’s advocate. These are the 10 reasons why psychedelics are bad.

10 Reasons Why Psychedelics are Bad

1. They Cause Anxiety

While popular culture and your dimwitted friend will tell you that it is all about colors, there is more to it. These drugs can cause problems with anxiety (also anxiety disorders), even inducing panic attacks during the high. The problem with this is that there is typically no way to limit the severity of the symptoms. Unless you take a “trip killer” medication like a benzodiazepine, you are royally screwed until the end. The reason for this are the hallucinations and lack of scrutiny caused by the drug itself. There are also instances where people continue to have anxiety after the trip is over. In spite of it not always being an issue, it is certainly something worthy of consideration. It should be stated that psychedelics can inadvertently help with anxiety as well.

2. They Cause Depression

People who have taken psychedelics always seem to forget the fact that psychedelics can cause depression. While the depression may not be long-term, it is still certainly there. These drugs can even induce a depressive disorder the same way they can cause anxieties disorders. The problem is that people have a hard time blaming the right things because of the cult surrounding psychedelics. The person is always to blame, but even if a person is not necessarily susceptible already, there are still risks. It may be true that you did not have to deal with any kind of depression, but others do. If understanding an existential crisis and a lack of motivation interest you, psychedelics can offer this. Although, if you can overcome this, your depression, at least with psilocybin, can parish for a while.

3. They Cause Hardened Beliefs

If you already believe that you are the messiah and deserve the worship of everyone around you, psychedelics are not for you. Strangely enough, while this may not necessarily be common, these thoughts can be caused by psychedelics. If you already believe in something, psychedelics are likely to make you believe in them more. While this does not really seem like something bad, it certainly can turn into something worse. There are instances where someone takes a psychedelic and begins to think these thoughts. While this has something to do with a subconscious thought, no one can know for sure. This can affect just about anyone, and you will have to take this psychedelic to literally unlearn all you have learned. However, it is not all bad if you get lucky by maintaining reasonable thoughts.

4. They Cause Confusion

Anyone taking a hallucinogen can tell you that a lot does not make sense when they are physically on the drug. Even when you come off of it, you will struggle to make sense of things for a while. You may even forget things you were very much aware of before. A sense of lost confidence in the facts is a typical reaction to those who have taken a psychedelic. This means that a dysfunctional new belief system may follow a single consumption of one. It is also very common for psychedelics to create significant degrees of paranoia. This can create situations where the fear centers in your brain become overactive. This is generally caused by the serotonin receptors making your more susceptible to a belief in anything.

5. They Cause Schizophrenia

Not only can psychedelics cause short-term delusions, they can also cause mental disorders like schizophrenia. If you are already susceptible, you are at greater risk of contracting these mental problems. Although most people get away with having a relatively vapid experience during their trip, some people do not. Even if the fears seem sophomoric at best, they can still lead to a massive level of confusion. Delusions and persistent hallucinations are possible, leading to a fixation of what reality is. Being lost in this will only make someone’s problem worse. Someone taking any kind of hallucinogen or dealing with psychosis will only find a harder life after psychedelics. This is why you should avoid these psychoactive drugs if you are mentally ill.

6. They Cause Judgement Problems

It is very common for people taking hallucinogens to lack common judgement. If you decide to drive while intoxicated, you can easily get into an automobile accident. When you are intoxicated, you should be avoiding doing just about anything but laying on a bed. The problem is that some of these psychedelics act as stimulants, meaning you will want to move around. In this case, some people may be liable to do something stupid or against there normal character. This is no different than any other hard drug, only there is no guarantee of a good time. The good time may be great, but it is no better than someone dealing with stimulant psychosis. Hell, a hangover can give you more lucid realizations. If you are lucky to walk out without having horrid obsessions, you will still struggle with reality.

7.They Can Cause Accidental Suicide

The side effects of taking a psychedelic or any hallucinogen can include accidental suicide. While this may seem crazy to some, it is quite a serious problem. There have been numerous times where a person accidentally takes a dangerous medication or walks into a street full of cars. Even if it is not the most common thing in the world, it is common enough to be considered a problem. It can start as a vivid dream that ends up turning reality before a person can even find out. The psychosis that can be involved, especially if you mix weed or two psychedelics together, is bad. Judgement calls are always bad on this drug, so accidents and sill decisions are likely to happen.

8. They Cause Stupidity

Forgetfulness should not be understated, and there is no doubt a correlation with stupidity and hallucinogens. As I have already mentioned above, if you are already adherent to dumb beliefs, in will only continue. It is not to say that the symptoms are any worse than other drugs, but this is nonstarter. People who think that psychedelics will solve their problems are already on the road to nowhere. The facts you were so confident in before will fade, as you struggle to try and remember anything. To those gullible enough to buy into this, this will be adopted as a new way to think. The epiphany of learned facts will be seen as part of a control scheme. In the end, this seems good, but it is often misguided too far in the wrong direction. You always have a choice to make, but they are not under ideal circumstance.

9. They Cause PTSD

Schizophrenia, along with PTSD, are the most common disorders people can end up with after taking a psychedelic. While post-traumatic stress disorder is considered an anxiety disorder, it is different that typical anxiety. PTSD often involves specific triggers and flashbacks, which are very common among psychedelic users. Although, just because you have flashbacks, does not mean that you have PTSD. The fear caused by psychedelics themselves can bring out the worst fears in people. The fear could have been caused by an already traumatizing experience. The problem with these drugs is that you never know exactly what you will get, preexisting problems or not. It is important to know that if you have these mental health conditions, you should avoid taking these drugs.

10. They Can Cause Chronic Hallucinations

While it is not common for psychedelics to cause fatal issues like serotonin syndrome (unless mixed with MDMA or anti-depressants), they can cause long-term hallucinations. This is called hallucinogen persisting perception disorder, and it can cause flashbacks of your tripping experiences. It only takes one dose of the drug, and you can end up dealing with this for years. Funny enough, if you end up having an unfortunate flashback to your trip, you can end up causing worse hallucinations. This problem can interfere with driving or other day to day activities that involve working eyesight. If you cannot drive because, you may run into some problems. This means you are stuck unable to drive or driving under the influence. After this, you can take some ketamine for your depression and MDMA for your PTSD.
