The 10 Astonishing Serial Killers Who Seemed Normal

The 10 Amazing Serial Killers Who Seemed Normal
At least I don’t look crazy.

Have we not heard it all before? Too many times was a serial killer on the prowl while the neighbor was thinking about how great they were. Before long, their coworkers may have begun to talk about how great they were for walking their dog that one time. Yeah, they are the ones you least expected to kill someone. Just before they went off on their killing spree, they had a heart, but deep down, their ravage and cynical nature was already beginning to form. This is my spin, at least. These are the 10 amazing serial killers who seemed normal.

Many of them you would least expect to become murderers, and some people would find them charming in spite of this. Sometimes being too nice can be a little suspicious. While most “cereal” killers were hidden to a degree, they were not always the nicest people. I am here to list some of them that were at least considered the nicest by at least one person. How were they nice, and how was it twisted? Well, here are the big ones, and this is how they may have fooled you, loved ones, and victims. How unassuming, right? Here is a list of the top 10 crazy serial killers who were thought to be normal or nice.

The 10 Amazing Serial Killers Who Seemed Normal

1. Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was an American serial killer born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1960. Jeff was a strange man, but he grew up in a mostly kind and caring family. He apparently had a surgery that removed a double hernia that ended up changing him forever. Dahmer may have been mentally ill, and he claimed insanity at his trial. He became increasingly withdrawn, especially after the birth of his younger brother. Although he ended up being a kook and alcoholic, he was often considered the class clown throughout high school. He even joined the US Army in December, 1978 after dropping out of Ohio State.

Of course, like many serial killers with something to hide, he had a dark side. When he was a teenager, he realized a same sex attraction and began to mutilate dead animals. It had even been said that he was sexually assaulted as a teenager. During his time in court, he was even diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, but this diagnosis did not make a difference. In order to manipulate his victims, he would appear nice and polite. He’d make offers of money and sex to lure them in to ultimately brutalize them. His first victim was in 1978, but he did not kill again until 1987. From there he proceeded to kill, rape, and cannibalize 16 more victims.

2. Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy was an American serial killer born in Burlington, Vermont in 1946. Bundy was considered by many, including his close friends to be a nice and well adjusted guy. The kind of guy, one of his friends said, you would want your sister to marry. He later went on to murder over 30 women. This was probably his immeasurable charm at work. Of course, it is always easy to look back and see problems in the past once the truth has been revealed.

He was a perfect law abiding citizen with no criminal record to boot. Bundy also was said to seem like the guy who should be in charge and liked the right things. He was also often considered a ladies man, but of course, anyone too charming should be questioned. When he was a kid though, a friend thought that he was “a little bit off.” This ended up being true later on, as his future murders would indicate. Afterall, normal to many is subjective, but Bundy certainly pulled off the nice guy act well.

3. John Wayne Gacy

John Wayne Gacy was an American serial killer born in Chicago, Illinois in 1942. Gacy is known as a clown, or at least working as one. He would often clown around at charity events or children’s birthday parties. Yeah, trust the clown back then, but nowadays, clowns have a nasty reputation in part because of Gacy. The reason for this is because of his serial killing murder spree of young children and teenagers — mostly boys.

Part of the job or not, he was considered nice and sociable to the people he entertained. He was also considered normal in childhood, but he had a tendency towards sadism. Later on he became a fairly successful independent contractor before moving into his own house. He would later be caught because one of his young work helpers ended up ratting him out because of his proceeding desire to rape and kill. Gacy was later found in 1978 after having killed over 30 people.

4. Ed Gein

Ed Gein, also known as the Butcher of Plainfield, was an American convicted murderer and body snatcher. He was born in 1906 in Wisconsin on a quiet and seemingly normal farm. The problem with this story is that, at some point, it always turns weird. While he may not be technically considered a serial killer, he is still strange nonetheless. Even then, he did kill, but there was very little method, and his alibi was barely noticeable. It almost seems like if you can include Ed Gein, you can include anyone, because he was a weird but normal guy.

To outsiders, other than being quiet and alone, seemed rather innocuous and normal. When his older brother Henry died in 1944 under strange circumstances involving a fire at their farm, no one suspected Gein of wrong doing. Once his mother died in 1945, he became a virtual hermit because of his absolute obsession with her. I suppose a hermit now would seem strange, but it depends, and things have obviously changed. Gein ended up being convicted of grave robbing and the murder of two women with a likeness to his mother.

5. Charles Manson

Charles Manson was an American convicted felon, cult leader, and serial killer born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1934. Manson was a crazy man, having to get by with petty crime in his youth. He is the leader of the Manson gang, and this led to a spree of up to 35 murders, including Sharon Tate. While it seems weird to include him as normal, it does depend on the context. The same thing with including any mass murderer, it is about what made the big ones seem normal, too.

Manson obviously made an impression and seemed fairly normal, at least to the people who decided to follow him. Yeah, to the average person he may have seemed weird, with his interest in hallucinogens and all, but he did gain a following. It was ultimately his unconventional lifestyle that lured his followers in with such ease. In addition to this, he had a love posse of young women who loved to follow him around. He would treat them great, and they thought he was Jesus. Now that’s a love circle if I ever did see one.

6. Richard Ramirez

Richard Ramirez, known as the Night Stalker, was an American serial killer born in El Paso, Texas in 1960. Ramirez grew up hanging out and smoking weed with his older cousin. He eventually went to the dark side and began obsessing about Satan. He then decided to become a mass murderer beginning in 1985. Even some of the strangest wackos got away with murder for a while, and Ramirez might be considered one of them.

His brushing bride to be, Doreen Lioy, considered him to be a nice, kind, and charming guy. At least she said this to CNN in 1997, and she thought that he was a great person. Of course, this was later on after he had been convicted and sent to San Quentin State Prison in the nineties. Love can start late and in prison! It kind of reminds me a certain comic book character origin story. She sat through his trial, got married to him in prison in 1996, and was by his side until his death in 2013.

7. Charles Whitman

Charles Whitman, known as the Texas Tower Sniper, was an American mass murderer who was born in Lake Worth, Florida in 1941. While he wasn’t necessarily a serial killer or methodical, he did murder a lot of people; it was all in one day in fact. Although he may have at least seemed normal, it goes to show that anything can change for any reason at any time. He ended up murdering his wife and mother before sniping random civilians from the top of a tower at the University of Austin later in the same day.

Whitman was considered a good student and scout, he got married, but his upbringing was a little tough. He left his house early to join the Marine Corps to help him avoid his dad’s violent anger. Then, he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and enrolled back in at The University of Texas at Austin. He was concerned about his mental health and severe headaches later on, so he had visited a therapist. It was later found out that it may have been his upbringing, service, or a brain tumor found in his autopsy that caused the shooting to occur.

8. Albert Fish

Albert Fish was an American serial killer, child rapist and cannibal born in Washington D.C. in 1870. Fish was notorious for his murders of young children, and it all started early on. His father was 75 when he was born and died when he was just 5. Also, his family was plagued with mental illness. He was sent off to an orphanage by his mother as a young boy. This is where he learned to indulge in pain and sadomasochism. Albert had claimed to have murdered a child in each state.

Fish was considered normal by most accounts. He was also a quite small, frail and unassuming man, too. Albert did not begin his murder spree until later on his life, but he obviously had an obsession with children, including Grace Budd. He would dress nice and sweet talk them until he made his final move. Also, he would inconspicuously commit his murders, and since he would not stick out, he got away with it for as long as he did. He maintained his life as a prostitute and house painter until his capture through a disturbing confession.

9. Charles Sobhraj

Charles Sobhraj, also known as the Bakini Killer, was a French serial killer born in Saigon, French Indochina in 1944. He was known to quite the disarming character, and it was said that he had a recognizable voice. He was considered extremely charismatic and knew several languages. Sobhraj was also an experienced people person, so when doing his duty, he knew how to interact with his would be victims. How charming of him.

Sobhraj would often lure victims in with good looks, and when a traveler would pass him by, he knew exactly how to help them. He would often befriend just about anyone, especially those he wished to kill. His murders were often more considered a lifestyle choice than an impulsive violence. Since he had a great dislike for hippies, he would often target pot smoking hippies to murder. He was often considered very inconspicuous, nice and generous. He would often help travelers feel at home before killing them.

10. Dennis Nilsen

Dennis Nilsen was a Scottish serial killer who was born in Fraserburgh, Scotland in 1945. Nilsen grew up with his mother and grandparents, and he began to notice a homosexual attraction. The negativity became worse when his beloved maternal grandfather died. He mentioned that seeing his grandfather’s dead corpse during his open-casket funeral traumatized him. Over time he became more disenfranchised and began living a lonely life.

Dennis did not even really have a run in with the law until way later on. He went on through his teenage years living a fairly normal existence. He joined the army at 16 and became a butcher, went through police training, and later on became a recruitment interviewer. In the early seventies, he finally had a brush with the law when someone accused him of taking pictures of them when they were asleep. Dennis later went on to murder up to 15 people.
