The 10 Most Difficult Subjects

When it comes to learning, there are no better ways than challenging your brain with complexity. If you want to learn something easy, then you can take the low road. However, if you want to take your ability to think to a level further, you will have to take a risk. Like anything, difficulty comes from the sum of the parts when looking at the whole. You may realize how stupid you feel, or you may have an epiphany that can change the world. It can seem overwhelming at first, but you have the means at your disposal. The course of teaching yourself can be convoluted and challenging, but there are many alternatives. In the end, you have plenty to learn, and it’s up to you to catch those fish. These are the 10 most difficult subjects to learn and understand, at least when looking at the big fields.

The 10 Most Difficult Subjects

1. Physics

If you want to understand how the universe works on a smaller scale, then you are going to have to do some thinking. It may even require an understanding of mathematics and model structures. When it comes to subjects like physics, the discipline often does little to pay off. Although the facts may astound you at first, there is often little compromise in a world of theory. You may even be looking for work, but the end result is much further away than you think. There are numerous people following the status quo, and the start is only the beginning of the negativity it can bring.

2. Mathematics

If we are to discuss mathematics, we have to look at what mathematics involves. You will easily get lost in numbers and algorithmic scales of logic, but this is only the beginning. There are so many kinds of mathematics, and when going to school, you often only specialize in one. Some people go for statistics, and other people strive for calculus, geometry, or algebra. Math is a part of our lives, but taking it that one step further makes it even more difficult, i.e., science and technology. When push comes to shove, all of those problems you had while tipping your waitress will seem miniscule.

3. Engineering

Engineering, like physics, is a form of mathematics. It involves quandaries of structural integrity and ingenuity, but it goes beyond what simple algorithms can describe. While it is an easy thing to say, just about everything can be considered a form of engineering. You can be an electrical engineer, or you can be an engineer of aerospace technology. If you invented the lightbulb, then you are an engineer of trial-and-error, or you can be an engineer of computer software. Understanding equations is a massive part of engineering, even if the math is somewhat distant when discussing the job at hand.

4. Writing

Although it looks like I am discussing every basic subject, there are more than you think. Every subject is hard to some degree, including reading comprehension, but few are harder than writing. It does not matter what the alphabet is, but some languages can be more streamlined (when the discussion is on composition). We all start off — to some degree — at the same level, and reaching an ability to do it without thinking too much takes time. While jobs like journalism (informal writing) can be easy, there is some challenge in the dishonesty. In the end, mastering a written language can be hard, and only a few of us truly display it.

5. Chemistry

Like almost every subject on this list: Chemistry is hard and a part of our daily lives. It’s only when you begin to take it seriously that it becomes an entirely different beast. While it is not too hard to understand as a subject, it is difficult to understand the specifics. There are striking similarities to physics, and some things can simply be memorized. Other things take an ability to understand the rules and functions before reaching that final, ionizing conclusion. The deeper you delve into chemistry, whatever chemistry it may be, the more your obsessive side will take over for good.

6. Philosophy (Psychology)

Everyone likes to philosophize, but not everyone knows how to do it. People will claim all sorts of things and call it philosophy, but this is the first grave mistake. In fact, when learning to understand value and function, you can run into a plethora of barriers, including the desire to argue psychology. Although psychology and neuroscience are challenging, their meaning is elusive and projected into philosophy more. A lot of people can explain a simple desire to project, but few can describe an objective value. It may seem like the dumbest subject to include, but there’s no denying that it is near the top of the list.

7. Biology (Evolution)

Biology and our next subject have much in common, but there are differences. It is one of the three major branches of science, and it is in fact the largest and most researched one. If you want to be a biologist, you have to understand how life works. It can be the study of cellular membranes or the function of a zygote — biology will be there to challenge you. Although we have to learn some biology to become a medical doctor, the subjects branch off long before this. Furthermore, acquiring a biological understanding of the world around you is not only difficult, it is extremely important.

8. Medicine

Although culinary practices and geography take some time to learn, they are fairly easy to rule your way through. They’re too specific and are already included when describing other subjects. Learning medicine and becoming a doctor, even a psychiatrist, can be difficult; the “holistic” degree does not count. You can even include mental health practices in here as well, but the challenge comes with years of education. Like everything else on this list, it can take a long time to master before you can be trusted. You have to do more than remember, and you are constantly having to learn something new.

9. History

If you thought that history class was boring, then think again. The reason for your struggle is not only because of personal taste — it is the tedium of unscrupulous detail. If you found it hard to trudge through a history course, then you probably missed some of the best parts. The challenge comes when you actually try to be a historian, and finding all of those intricacies can be difficult. We can all look back and find issues with the past, but looking at it objectively seems disquieting and scary. Unfortunately, there is no learning from history if we cannot see the mistakes that should be avoided to begin with.

The 10 Most Difficult Subjects

10. Art (Literature)

When it comes to learning how to draw, you can run into complication. It can be an insurmountable obstacle, or the way of art can cause perplexing confusion. There are numerous ways to screw up, and trying to teach someone can be impossible. If they never developed the natural talent, then trying to describe it seems like a hurdle. Although it may sound stupid, doing any kind of art can be a challenge to both teach and learn. For some, it may be hard to understand because of the art, be it modern music or literature. No matter how much you try, you can end up feeling like a failure for it, in the end.

End

Every subject is difficult to some degree, but the description of difficulty comes with technicality. Although many people may find acting class difficult, most can scoot by without much frustration. You can suck at it, but there are still more actors that accomplished physicists. If you thought that speaking was hard, you may find the process of writing more difficult, like a science. Although most people can write, few people can do it good and professionally. When it comes to academic culture, we have to look at the odds of success and what appears to be more difficult. While most people may struggle with all of these subjects, some people will find at least one of them easy. This is the order that I think they belong in, but someone may see it differently.

— Even the people who studied these subjects in school find them hard. —

This list is interchangeable, but there are only so many subjects to go over. Some specialties are always going to be on this list, and others will come and go. Even subjects like law and politics are difficult, but they tend to fit under other categories. There’s nothing wrong with going over the popular disciplines, and this is what makes the subject so appealing. Some of them are ubiquitous, and even more of them are highly specific. How a person looks at it has some degree of viability, but some things are objectively challenging. The problem with learning is that it is hard to understand the ultimate point. The more you have to think, and the more you have to be creative, the tougher it actually is. In the end, it really depends on how arduous we are willing to make the brainy work.
