Let go, and drop the mic. It’s game over!

There’s a time and place for just about anything, and you’d probably think this untrue if you were sitting around and playing in virtual worlds every (other) day. (You’re solitary and have nothing to prove!) However, videogames are actually known for wasting your time and “frying your brain,” but they’re often defended because of their ability to increase your so-called “abilities” that are provided by the game, e.g., hand-eye coordination and puzzle-solving skills. Additionally, not only do they provide you with something artificial to distract you from your daily concerns, but they also provide plenty of people with entertainment without the need for leaving the house. And although this appears to be good, there are also plenty of downsides. Regardless, these are the 10 remarkable ways that video games melt your brain!

The rudeness that is culminated through a life of gaming is not always that bad, but it’s certainly a long-living phenomena. And as “arbitrary as it seems, videogames do waste your time, and they’re essentially a means of having an enjoyable experience when all else is lost. There’s also the issue of price and performance — you are wasting your money. Although, there are probably many people who think that the average gamer is skilled and knowledgeable on the subjects of computer science.

The 10 Remarkable Ways That Video Games Melt Your Brain

1. They Waste Time

Not everyone sees themselves as a time-waster; however, no matter how much time you waste, you’re still wasting your irredeemable time. (The amount of time does not matter!) It may not be readily obvious, but there are also plenty of people out there who willingly waste far too much of their time playing with their Xbox and PlayStation (PC as well) videogame consoles. However, we can even provide ourselves with knowledge that videogames began in the 1970s. We can also see how they provided casual entertainment for those, especially at IBM, who worked IT jobs or with anything related to computers. We can obviously see how they are time-wasters, but we can also see how they provided a safe way for people to vent their frustrations while working. Although, in spite of this, they’re still a waste of time!

2. They’re Stigmatized

The fact that videogames are stigmatized is not necessarily someone’s “fault”; although, it certainly remains as a potent side effect that can effect people significantly. (People will also choose to face this problem [or make it worse] even though games have become more mainstream.) Of course, videogames are a nice way to provide personalized and lazy entertainment for a person, but they’re also there to shred up your daily resources: your time, sanity, & money. And, like many other activities that provide little in the way of real-world benefit, they’re there to give you simple, rudimentary satisfaction. Yes, they can grab your attention, but there’s reason to understand how they are stigmatized — this can cause insecurities and other issues. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you cannot play them, but there are people out there who will choose to play them for far, far too long.

3. They Motivate Laziness

If we allow ourselves to see videogames as the progression of “home entertainment,” then we should not necessarily see boardgames as any different. (Boardgames aren’t as addictive, but they can be seen as a problem, too.) Although, it’s not necessarily that simple, as the advent of videogames came with a lot of other caveats — they’re promoting laziness & lethargy. Of course, we cannot necessarily blame videogames, but there is no denying that they can cause this phenomena. We now also have the technology and ability to get ourselves sucked into “immersion” that would otherwise be impossible back then (which is a problem). However, the more that we progress, the more that the anti-technology folks will see it as a burden against humanity. There’s also room to believe that people are using videogames as a way to facilitate a social life through other, even lesser means.

4. They Strain Your Eyes

We all love to stare into the depthless abyss from time to time; however, there are those of us who do little else. This can mean that, especially during those long nighttime (late night) sessions, you’re spending far too long staring at a bright screen through a dark room. Again, how is this at all healthy? Well, it’s not! And, to put it simply, there’s nothing about it that can be considered healthy. It also promotes bad hygiene, which is another caveat to facetiously consider. Also, spending this much time INDOORS is never entirely healthy, but there’s nothing wrong about saying that much of this is exaggerated (hyperbole). After all, this is a decision made by a person, but these choices end up having an undeniably negative impact on a person’s social status (unfortunately) and overall health.

5. They Create Isolation

The more that you find yourself playing a videogame (or any game for that matter), the more that you will likely find yourself isolated. Of course, unless you’re partaking in some sort of socially-structured group game, you’re likely sitting in abject isolation. Although there is nothing wrong with playing games, including videogames, doing too much of this kind of pastime can prove to be rather lethargy-inducing. While you are laying around and counting 1s and 0s, people are feeling as though they’ve become lost and disinterested. “Why is this?” you ask. Well, it’s because there are reasons to escape reality, and videogames provide an alternative, an escape! This may seem fantastic at first, but it’s not necessarily healthy to always rely on videogames as your sole means of interactivity. They, in fact, sow doubt, and it can even create insecurity, especially in partaking their self-indulgence.

6. They’re Horrible Contrived

The more that we feed into the world of blatant phantasmagoria, the more that we are indulging in unrealistic fantasies that can ruin our logistical thinking. And, although story-telling has marginally improved with time, there are still plenty of harmful low standards that allow us to to stupefy our belief systems, especially when it comes to more realistic rendering — graphical systems and engines — techniques. In fact, the people whom are drawn to videogames to begin with are typically people who need someone to tell them how the real world actually works (except for the jargon/semantics involved).

There’s also a terrible lack of understanding actual scope when it comes to the real world and its differences from a game. Unfortunately, those suffering with this problem do not typically want to live in anything but their fantastically led beliefs that are controlled by videogame logic, absurdity, and foundations. Also, if we get beyond the simple ways to insult games and actually get into the game, critical thinking goes out the window. Why even bother at that point, right? We’ll simply be arguing with a Dungeons & Dragons nerd who will throw everything you say out of the fairytale window of denial.

7. The Are Expensive

Nowadays, far too many people are throwing thousands of dollars away so that they can feed their latest vice for the sake of their gratified hedonism. Of course, not everyone is buying into the superficial hype that provides little in the way of real-world payoff, but the trend still exists, unfortunately. If we look at it even further, then we can also see how the industry providing these videogames is nearly the fastest-growing industry in the world. As people become more and more isolated, even when they’re in public, they will find reason to indulge in their latest fantasies. Additionally, this hivemind of money people throw at the latest game also means that anticipation is likely to build up. Marketing campaigns are then thoroughly invested in, and the engagement ends up reaching a peak. At this point, more and more people decide to indulge in their irresponsible and compulsive habits.

8. They Cause Weight Problems

Are we allowed to say that every person who plays videogames is mentally ill or physically unfit? Well, I think it’s a rather fair assessment, as people who play videogames tend to overeat or undereat because of their sedentary lifestyle. Of course, many of these seemingly unfair criticisms can be seen as stigmatization, but there are reasons for their existence. It’s also up to the person who’s feeling persecuted to decide if this is a problem that should control them. However, the world has changed, and we now have a lot of ways to spend our time. Not much has truly changed, but people now have access to a lot of computerized equipment, which makes videogames look even more fruitless. Even if we look at the mundane reasons why others attack videogames, we should still understand how they have a negative impact. Additionally, there are a lot of negative associations tied to them.

9. They Provoke Violence

As much as people would like to avoid it, videogames, although a good reprieve from daily stressors, are also a promoter of violence among naïve and suggestible youths. Even though news outlets love to blame them wrongly, there are reason behind the claims. There’s also room to believe that videogames can cause depression and anxiety thanks to the discrepancy between someone’s sheltered lifestyle and the videogames they choose to play. However, this is not to say that those who think videogames negative are absolutely correct, especially when it comes to their reasoning, right? Of course not!

Although, we have to be honest and understand that just because their reasoning doesn’t line up that there is nothing wrong. Thankfully, you have companies like Nintendo who will cater their games to what is considered a more casual or child-friendly audience. (This is what a videogame audience should be and is often unfairly fought to become.) Of course, there’s nothing wrong with keeping children in the loop of your average videogame, but it also says a lot about their target audience, the maturity level of average gamers, developmental issues, the undeniable desire to avoid obtuse and virulent stigmatization.

10. They’re Breaking Reality

If you’re looking to run a submarine, then you may as well use a game controller, right? However, piloting a submersible is no videogame, at least when we’re talking a non-simulation game. We can also change our televisions with the use of a remote while watching the most violent of movies. And although movies can be attacked as well, the discussion is obviously not about movies. Furthermore, movies are not as much of a problem (or as fun or interactive) as videogames. This means that they have less sway in how a person can react to their existence. And just because we can attack movies doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t also attack videogames. There’s also reason to look at the culture surrounding videogames and how they promotes immature and frivolous behavior among peer groups. Why? Because there’s reason to believe that people lose respect for those who disrespect and whom cannot be seen.

Ending

As you can see, there are no shortage of ways that a videogame can melt your itsy bitsy brain. Unfortunately, those haters are going to hate! Also, because they’re immature whiners with an anonymous bias, they will shriek as they see fit. Regardless, while we have made some progress towards making videogames more acceptable, they still have their litany of issues. Non-gamers will also have their issues with videogames, even though many of these issues are somewhat unfounded. Thankfully, everything is coming full circle, and we can begin to look at videogames and other forms of entertainment for what they really are. They have some good qualities, but not everything about them is good. Of course, videogames are not entirely to blame, and upbringing always has to be considered.

Remember, no one said that you have to stop playing! Just understand that videogames, especially today, require more and more investment. If you can somehow not get sucked into them in an unhealthy way, you will be keeping your time wasting to a minimum. Again, it’s not like you need my validation, but there are plenty of other things to do, especially if you’re capable.

Godspeed
