The 10 Remarkable Ways to Build More Character
Yes, you’re quite the funny character; however, it doesn’t necessarily take the darkness to build your character.

When it comes to building your own character, you should probably look within! (You can have ‘character’ and be an a**hole; however, you can have little character and be rather nice/kind.) The process is not always that straightforward, but it’s always worth a shot, right? Of course, it shouldn’t take all THAT much effort, but it certainly does present some problems for a lot of people. Especially for those of us who happen to have it rather “easy,” the deciding factors when you’re gaining character have to be from insight and upbringing. Unfortunately, this kind of introspection requires some alone time or the right kind of environment and people. It doesn’t mean that you need to suffer endlessly, but it requires a little bit of depth that’s quite hard to come by. (Character is typically built through pain & suffering, but it doesn’t always end well.) A little suffering doesn’t hurt, but overly internalizing or externalizing your frustrations never helped. For all that it’s worth, these are the 10 remarkable ways to build more character.

You don’t need to risk your life to save someone else’s; however, it still becomes a question of if you’re willing to do it anyway. Thankfully, there’s no need for you to go insane when you’re thinking about it!!! However, it occasionally takes character to stand up to yourself or the so-called system and do what you know is right by being honest. This, in turn, shows that you have enough character to stand up for yourself and what you believe in, especially when it’s difficult in some way or way outside of the norm. In the end, there’s no real good advice for you when it comes to you gaining character; however, the context counts for something. And you might as well take advantage of something good while you can.

The 10 Remarkable Ways to Build More Character

1. Think About It

Let’s just say that you’re searching for something online, but that someone who responds to you is acting kind of ‘shady.’ It’s obviously a double-edged sword to react kindly, but you can choose to react differently as well. Now, in the time that it takes you to think about how you’re going to react, you could have already let this problem go. This obviously doesn’t mean that you should run away; however, your subconscious character could have told you to react properly to begin with. (You shouldn’t always second-guess yourself.) Of course, it’s not always that simple, and you can always understand character as a means of displaying patience and thoughtful reaction. You should also understand that you have to often not get what you desire to gain an understanding of what it’s like. We may not see it this way, but it’s simply a matter of how you process your behaviors, i.e., your reactions. Now, some people will obviously carry these characteristics differently, but some people simply do not need to “experience” that.

2. Don’t Showboat

Some people, unfortunately, may think that building character is a real waste of time. There are also other people who will think that they’ve got a lot of character without realizing that they’re lacking in several key areas of character-building. Now, it’s not to say that it’s untrue, but a “well-carried” human will probably not struggle that much to display their well-mannered demeanor. It’s also worthy of consideration to notice that people of great character are not walking around and talking about it. Even if they want to, they will hold back, especially when they know that it’s not required. Thankfully, most people will notice someone with good character without much problem. (Some people will care and take notice; however, others will not.) Although it seems as though no one will care, it will pay off in spite of what other people think. Remember, it’s all about habituating yourself towards becoming better, and learning not to let others bother you is a pivotal part of this struggle to begin with. Just lighten up, surely!

3. Low Expectations

You don’t always have to suffer or not get what you want to build more character, but it is something that typically occurs naturally. It can obviously be an intentional process, but your intentions will not always guide you enough. There’s always a prevailing feeling that you have when you inherit better characteristics, and it’s typically something that takes time. If it happened acutely, then you’re already on your way, as the shock of acute change or distress will have you processing your problems for longer. Although, in spite of the never-ending chicanery of life putting you down, you can overcome it all with some time and effort. (You can not typically cause/create your own suffering and expect to gain character, per se.) If you want to gain some decent character though, then you should understand that it takes character to want to build more character. After all, good character is bravely built and not simply curated or made out of nothing; it can be arduous and full of hard work. Just know that it’s easier to have nothing.

4. Be Aware

If you’re not struggling to change your bad character, then it probably means that you have already built some along the way. (This subject is a little more complicated than what is represented in the prior statement.) There are even some people who believe that character is built on stupidity (or intelligence); however, it’s typically built on suffering and hardship. Some things we will always be unprepared for, and it’s not to say that you have to be nice to everyone. Although, a little self-awareness makes a huge difference in your ability to have and/or gain that character! (Character is when it counts, so simply being raised with ease [or good character] is not always going to be enough.) You can obviously be nice or really kind about some things; however, it can all fall apart when something unexpected happens. It obviously doesn’t mean that you have to be a stoic a**hole, but it doesn’t hurt to respond to things more rationally. Of course, being in the right state of mind is always preferable, but your awareness counts, too.

5. Try to Improve

Character represents the mental and moral (or ethical) qualities distinctive to an individual. This obviously isn’t the entire story, of course! Some people are raised properly or suffered enough through childhood to the point of changing their ways. However, some people are so heavily “burdened” with their “problems” that they will struggle to display any kind of character whatsoever. (It takes effort [or the right amount of pain] to look past your and other people’s faults.) Although, to whom it may concern, a conscious effort never should get in the way of improving. People also need to understand that having an easier head start towards good character is very much a privilege. Of course, bad character is generally very obvious, and it is also very, very common! You don’t even have to be a people pleaser, but even a person looking to satiate their desire to be accepted can lack some humility. In the end, it’s not really your fault that you lack character, but it’s something that you’ll not go out of your way to EMBRACE, hopefully!

6. Learn the Limits

Understanding the nature of your character can also come down to your philosophical understanding of purpose and value. You see, we’re all in this game together, so we’re all responsible for what happens to others around us, especially if we’re influential. (Far too many people destroy their image and/or reputation for the sake of fame, and they may not even mind it.) The more that we recognize this, the more that we can understand that we’re all important — this is crucial to and because of character. Additionally, we all hold value, and this context makes perfect sense. (We’re all allowed to think that we’re special; however, this should not hold a candle to the truth when it is required around others [and ourselves].) To make matters even more perplexing, we should understand that we have to true purpose in life, but we can obviously make a difference in other people’s lives. And, at least for the sake of argument, we can always make a difference on our own. I mean, it’s not like you want to go hungry, right?

7. Be Empathetic

The worst part of building character is likely that IMPENDING realization that other people will appear less interesting to you. Unfortunately, you will also realize (with your real eyes) that many people are still lacking in character, and this epiphany never really bodes that well. (It might give you more work to do to — helping others.) Hell, it’s even worse when you understand that having character doesn’t always pay off; however, this is a part of growing your character anyway. Someone will have to be sacrificed, but we should know that no one should be on that chopping block. We can know that we’re all the same; however we should also give others a chance to shine or be the same as us. Unfortunately, someone has to go, even though we should all hold the same value. “Is someone more likely to fit this role?” you curiously ask. Well, it’s obvious that it may be true, but we should never hold that trigger in our hands with — your mental aptitude is allowed to change but it can say something about your character, etcetera.

8. Don’t Be Careless

When it comes to “gaining character,” it’s not always about what other people (likely) think. Now, it’s also not always about you trying to make yourself a better person; we can not always help this. (It never hurts to actually try and be a better person, regardless of your reasoning … .) We’re always selfish to some degree, and it’s not like we can really help it. However, it should almost always boil down to some accountability and a feeling of responsibility to yourself and others around you. In spite of others, good character is typically shown as courage and bravery without a selfish or resolute cause. (Of course, life isn’t fair, and narcissism is a common characteristic in those who decide to break it.) Although, it’s easy to see someone who is full of character versus someone who isn’t. Crooked folks also tend to have a comeuppance waiting for them around the next corner. There is no such thing as perfect character, but a Nazi with character is likely harder to come by than an altruist with character. And it’s never all this simple.

9. Group Work

If you want one of the fastest and “easiest” (hard) ways to grow your character, then you should probably consider — without expecting something in return — “forcing yourself” to do some group work (social work). This can obvious come in the form of helping someone out or even working at a soup kitchen. (You obviously need to mean it, too.) It doesn’t really matter how you get yourself to do it; although, it’s important to steer yourself with the correct intentions. You can also be a person who loves to help people (especially for selfish reason) or a person who does what needs to be done (the right thing) in spite of wanting to do it. Unfortunately, life is frustrating and feels like it doesn’t pay off! Of course, what you like and who you represent yourself with (your associations and rationalizations) say a lot about your character, including your ability to listen, understand, and empathize. Even if you disagree, do you quickly change your mind in favor of a selfless cause? In the end, it’s about doing things you wouldn’t want to do.

10. Push the Boundaries

At times, you will have to try harder than others to overcome your ‘personal obstructions’ (your comfort zone). That’s why you should take a lot of preemptive measure when it comes to gaining your character (planning). Good character is easy to catch on to, but people can also fake it, at least for a time. Thankfully, it’s easy to spot and apprehend the pretenders. It may be hard to tell good character; however, it can be represented in a plethora of different ways. Unfortunately, it’s also true that you can tell when someone has better character than someone else, at least for the most part. This is partially based on someone’s life choices and their current struggles, but it really is a matter of relative comparison as well. Maybe this is good example: A decent person will give a homeless person 5 bucks, but an amazing person will give most of their money to a better cause, rich or not. Now, we’re obviously allowed to have bad days, but your drudgery explains your character, too! (Poor character is very common, right!?)

Ending

As you can see, there are plenty of different ways to gain and grow your great character. It will NOT come very easily; however, half of the battle is beyond your intention. Thankfully, the struggles that come along the way should also serve as a reminder of your hard work paying off. (It doesn’t really matter how or why you’re becoming stronger willed, as it often means very, very little.) Of course, not everyone is going to display their character in every way! Again, being kind-hearted doesn’t give you a right to claim undeniable character, and there’s never a guarantee. Like mentioned previously, we may understand that we can make a difference in our own lives; however, our purpose goes beyond ourselves and personal reason. (You can be scared and have a lot of character!) This is something that you will always find purpose in trying to avoid (e.g., fear, love, and hate). In the end, your character is very important, and you can improve or decide that it’s not really worth. So, despite your worries, it’s important to aid/read others!
